Career Opportunities at Vassar

Vassar was acquired by Grede Foundries, Inc. in 1986. It produces high detail, close tolerance, precision shell mold gray iron castings weighing 1/2 to 20 pounds, and services a customer base that includes both domestic and international customers. Vassar's precision shell mold process is an excellent application for component weight reduction. Many times, the process can greatly reduce machining.

This facility produces over 30 million castings annually and has an annual production capability approaching 40,000 tons. The primary markets for these castings are the automobile industry (both OEM and aftermarket), the refrigeration industry (compressors and appliance), and the hydraulic industry. In addition, the facility serves as the Research and Development Center for Grede's Light Material efforts.

Vassar operates as a profitable and growing business prepared to meet customer expectations long into the future. Vassar is prepared to customize material and casting design to ensure that the customer is supplied an optimal casting.

Commitment to Safety, Quality Control, and the Environment

Vassar meets or exceeds all state and federal environmental regulations and continues to be an innovator of modern foundry facilities. Efforts are focused on helping to preserve a clean environment for Vassar and its neighbors.

Safety programs at Vassar have helped to achieve an average of 2.6 OSHA incidents per 200,000 work hours, which compares impressively against the national average for iron and steel foundries of 16.7 incidents per 200,000 work hours. Vassar is constantly working to improve this record.

Vassar is QS-9000 and ISO 14001 certified. The plant has also received numerous customer quality and safety awards, including the National Safety Council "Green Cross" Award. Vassar strives to meet all customers' expectations with a 99 percent delivery to promise date and "Right the First Time" sample approvals.

Commitment to Education and the Community

Vassar's various Engineering and Information Systems Departments participate in hiring Professionals in Training. In this program, recent college graduates join the firm and are placed in an accelerated training program.

The plant supports a wide variety of community activities including Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Little League Baseball, Police-Pride City-Wide, park and recreational area beautification projects, Playground Pride Project, American Cancer Society, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
